If you are on a tight budget then avoid window shopping, or shopping itself as much as possible. If you walk into a shop you are very likely to purchase something, which you wouldn't have really needed it if you hadn't seen it.

Whenever you’re considering making an unnecessary purchase, wait thirty days and then ask yourself if you still want that item. Quite often, you’ll find that the urge to buy has passed and you’ll have saved yourself some money by simply waiting. If you want, you can even keep a “thirty day list” where you write down the item and the day you’ll reconsider it, but I prefer just to keep this one in my head – that way, I often just forget about the unimportant things.

I then used this info at Pepboys, where I had a small amount of warranty left (it's pro rated based on treadware) and told them prices I had found elsewhere...was a little dishonest in that I told them an even lower number that I had really found (bluff!); they matched it and beat it by $100.

How do you define your wants and needs? Where do you draw the line between your must have items and your impulse shopping? Well sometimes you can trick yourself into thinking something is a need when it's really just a want.

What made you think of this item?
How much is the item?
Is there a cheaper alternative?
Can you go 30 days without it?
Do you make a special trip for this item?
How often do you use it?

All good questions to ask before you buy something. More often then not you can get into the habit of having something around and just continue buying it.

Split your shopping list into Wants and Needs - You can make those hard choices at the checkout counter faster if you know which items you can do without. How many times have you put back part of dinner only to make another trip back later when you could have put back the soda instead?

I know I want coffee every morning, but I sure do like lunch too. If you can buy Dirt Cheap coffee, wouldn't you rather have the money for lunch instead of taking Ramen each day?

There's quite a few ways to cut costs while doing your shopping, just make sure you keep your wants and needs separate.

Everyone does a little impulse shopping. But you never notice it until you come up short one month. Here's a trick to keep you on track with your impulse shopping.

The 30 Day Rule :
When you see something you want, but not something you need per say- Add it to a list and mark the date[June 1st, Scratching Post $29.99], When July hits, you can ask yourself how much you really still want the item. Most the time the urge to buy or get a good deal alone is enough to spark an impulse purchase. But if you hold off 30 days, sometimes even leaving the store is enough to cross it off the list, but you will find it easier and easier to calm your impulse shopping.

I use the application "Grocery Gadget" and there may be other apps out there that do the same thing. I include the cost of the item on my list. Not only does it keep a running tally, and therefore I can keep within my budget easier, but it saves me shopping time as well. It's quite a game for me to prepare my list and keep it within my budget. I like to keep the "cost" of my grocery trips to below a certain amount, and this app lets me spread out my purchases so that I am spending more evenly, and often less.

Shopping at thrift stores for clothing is something a lot of people think "only poor people do." Well here's the truth - it's what smart savers do. Visit your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other local thrift store and take a good look at the clothing selection available. The clothes may not be the latest fashion trends of the season but if you're not trying to "keep up with the Jones'" then they'll be just fine, and look good to boot.

While you may have to dig through racks full of old ugly sweaters you will be quite surprised what you can find if you put in the effort to regularly visit thrift stores. I have purchased numerous "name brand" pieces of clothing for pennies on the dollar what they would cost new. Not only do I save money, I also feel good knowing I'm both "reducing" and "reusing" by buying local and used.

Many thrift stores are connected with local charities so you will be helping people in your immediate community who need assistance. I should also note that the perception that used clothes are "dirty" or "disgusting" to be mostly untrue. Most stores I've been to wash all clothes before putting them on display. It's always a good idea to wash anything you buy used, and worst case scenario you can take it to the dry cleaner.

A shirt that would cost $50 new can often be found for as little as a dollar. If you've never checked out the local thrift store in your town - now is the time to stop by next time you're in the area. Not only will you save money, resources, and help the local community you may just find yourself hooked on the thrill of finding a great bargain.
