I use cash sometimes and made a pact with myself and God that for every dollar I get back in change it would go to my Donation Savings and on January 1st I would donate it. It's been two months and I have 56 dollars towards donations... mind you I only make about 1,400.00 a month, am a 19yr old living on there own, with 800.00 in rent and a dog to take care of. Plus I only use cash 20-30% of the time for things.

Donating is made super easy this way and it's funny when the cashier just happens to only have one's and gives you 7 dollars in 1's! Someones sending me a message lol :)

Save your 1's for a good cause!

This only works if you pay off the balance every month, otherwise you lose money paying interest.

Pick a reward card that works for you - maybe a 2% cash back, aeroplan mile or Airmiles (my program of choice) and make all of your day-to-day puchases on this card. This helps in two ways:

1. All of your day-to-day transactions are easier to analyze at month end because they are in one place.
2. You are accumulating all your effort to one reward system.

Using an Airmiles Mastercard combined with shopping at Safeway and Shell earns me $60/mo in gas certificates! That is one tank of gas a month that I don't pay for! =)

It sounds simple, but in order to maximize your potential to stay in your budget, ask yourself "Do I really need this?" when your making a purchase. More often than not, once you think about it, you will realize you can do without it for a little while longer.

And, if you are able to, each time you receive your paycheck, take whatever money was left over in your checking account and put it in savings. I use the $25 increment rule. If I have $60 left in my checking when I get paid, I take $50 and put it in the savings.

Hope this helps you save some money.

They offer higher interest rates compared to banks with branch locations because they don't have to pay to run the branches. Everything is done online or over the phone.

I understand that saving is a lot harder than spending. Well its because you dont have discipline when it comes to money. What am i writing here is through experience. If i receive my salary this day after 2 days i dont have money left. and im waiting again for the next payday. Though i got 2 part time job and 1 food cart business still nothing left in my savings account. Why? Because i dont have discipline. I have a bad attitude when it comes to financial matter. Oooops( I dont just spent my money for me, i send 2 sister in college and send some for my family as well) And i dont live with my family.I rent a boarding house. So means im more on giving and eating. Now that im 27 i just realize that i need to save.
Heres what im doing and its working on me so why not give it a try also:

1. Set a certain percentage for every cashout you have to make for this month

2. Set your budget for the month let say Php 2,000.00 for meals, transpo, groceries, etc.

3. Now set the Php 2,000.00 allocation again in 100%. I know Php2,000.00 pesos is not enough for a month but atleast if u jack a little bit still you still doing your best to spend at this amount
its like doing your best to be on top of the class and if you failed atleast you've passed

4. At the end of the month study your monthly expenses. Thats the time u make adjustment.

Note: Im not good in english, especially my grammar and spelling so if i commit mistakes here pardon me.

For example if you know that you need to spend 20 dollars a day on average for food and transport, put only that amount in wallet!

You can spend as much as you like in that wallet knowing that you will NEVER bust your budget. Avoid using Credit Card. (unless of course its an emergency)
Whatever that is left over for the day, put it in a box or something at home. At the end of the month, give yourself a treat using what's left!

Try to have at least 3 separate accounts:
(1) Day to day account
(2) Savings account
(3) Investment account

The Day to Day account serves as your daily expense account. You should take time to set the daily, weekly and monthly expenses that you are incurring so that you could move the excesses to your two other accounts.

The Savings account is your piggy bank. This should not be less than 6x your monthly expense. The reason for this is so that you could survive for 6 months if you lose your current source of income (day job).

The Investment account would be your money pot which you could gamble away on several investments (stocks, mutual funds) or to store your funds for something like your own business. You should only deposit to this account when you have reached the minimum amount in your Savings account.

Don't go too low level in a budget, no one wants to spend their life tracking how much they spent on groceries 1 month compared to another month. Instead try to follow something like
X% Monthly income on mandatory or committed expenses (rent, food, gas, etc)
Y% Monthly income on fun money (movies, dates, games)
Z% on short term savings (money into a savings account for unforeseen expenses)
A% on long term savings (money meant to grow over long periods of times like 5-10 years; stocks mutual funds)
B% on retirement (IRA, etc)

You can still keep track to a low level, but at a glance you can see if you're been over spending on mandatory expenses, fun money or not saving enough. It's worked great for me for many years and was inspired (and explained much better) by this article:

The 60% solution:

This is dead simple, but essential for money management
Make sure you save at least 10% of your total monthly income and DON'T TOUCH IT!
To make it easier, make automatic transfers every week to your savings account, so you can't spend it.
I say weekly, because otherwise you will probably already have spend it by the end of the month.
