If you have an electric water heater, turn it off (I turn mine off at the breaker). I turn it back on about 20-30 minutes before i need to take a shower or run the dishwasher and when i am finished, i turn it right back off. I saw my electric bill drop over $15 (my mom starting doing it and saw her bill drop by more than $25!). The water heater will retain a lot of the hot water throughout the day if you need some for other uses.
