Bank at a credit union. You shouldn't have to pay fees for a chequing account. Also, set up an automatic withdrawal with ING Direct or another high-interest savings bank - this way you don't miss the money you stash every paycheque.

This may seem ridiculous for some but I find it so much easier to have a few different accounts to deal with money allocation. If I was to rely on just my savings account I would be screwed.

Besides the standard key-card account, I've got a free net bank account with my original bank and an ING saver which allows free transaction between it and my linked account.
With the ING I automatically put aside $50 a week which quietly builds up (but is there if needed in an emergency) and the extra net bank account I use to put aside rent and bills so I always have that covered, even if I have to go hungry until pay day.
