I take trips often to visit family and college friends. The trips range anywhere between 1.5-5 hours. If you do similar things, you can do what I do, which is post your ride on a rideshare somewhere like craigslist, and charge the rider money (or simply split gas and tolls). Sometimes I can completely cover the cost of a 5 hour trip this way, though you do need to be careful using the internet because you never know who will ask to ride in your car.
