Learn to eat at home more

Cooking at home is a really good way to begin to start spending less money. If you’re used to going out to eat whenever you’re hungry, this can be a rather difficult transition to make. Our minds would like to eat more at home, but when we’re hungry emotion kicks in and we find ourselves eating fast food once again. Here are some tips that should help you kick the habit of eating out too much.

Start Simple – You don’t want to overdo it and try to stop eating out cold turkey. Instead start small, and pick out a few recipes from some cookbooks or the internet and give them a try. Pick out one or two day a week where you cook for yourself rather than going out to eat. If your recipe was a successful, save it for later and make it again some day. You can even bring the leftovers to work if it was really good and that way you won’t have to eat out over the noon hour.

Don’t Relegate Yourself to Frozen Food – A lot of people go out to eat because they think the food is better, and if all you ever eat is frozen food and don’t teach yourself to cook, you’re going to be stuck with some really bad food at home to eat and will start letting yourself to go out to eat a lot more. Commit yourself to making some real food with actual ingredients and put an honest effort into learning to cook.

Start With Easy Ingredients – When you first begin, there’s no way that you’re going to be using some of the things that you’ll commonly see on the food network. Just start out easy with things such as hamburger, vegetables and the like. You can even use some of the conveniently packaged items such as bags of shredded lettuce and pre-made hamburger patties. It’s still cheaper than eating out, and later you can step it up to the raw ingredients.

Get a Good Recipe Resource – A lot of people might suggest that you go out and pickup a classic cookbook, which is fine. If you’re web savvy, Google is a great source of recipes. Just type in whatever you want, and chances are you’ll be able to find a decent recipe for whatever you want to make online. If you’re looking for a good starter cookbook, pickup “How To Cook Everything” by Mark Bittman. Bittman shows you how to make a lot of great different foods with not a lot of ingredients.

Think Mexican – If you can get tortillas, shredded chicken, beans, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream, you can make dozens of different meals with just a few different ingredients. You could make taco salad, tacos, enchiladas, or just about anything off the menu from Taco Bell.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to start out small by preparing yourself a few meals a week. You’ll start out with some basic ingredients and recipes, and then later be able to expand your palate when you become a better chef.
